We've all been there: you have a beautiful head of curls but you lack volume in your hair. Most curlies would like a little more volume at the roots, but how do you get this?
Create volume in your hair
By volume we specifically mean that we will lift the hair at your roots. This is often slightly more difficult than creating more volume in the hair lengths. There is not one ready-made tip to achieve this. There are several roads that lead to Rome. It's fun to try all the tips in this blog. This will help you get to know your curls and find out what works best for you.
Tip 1: Blow-dry forward
If you have curly hair, you often use a hairdryer with a diffuser. This is a large head with protruding pins that you can click onto the hair dryer.
How can you create extra volume with this? You do this by tilting your head forward while blow-drying. You lift your hair up with the hairdryer and let it dry. Turn your head to the left and right while blow-drying so that you dry all parts of your hair thoroughly. The photo below clearly shows how this works:
Tip 2: Lift your hair with clips
Is the previous method not quite working for you yet? Then you can also raise the hair with root clips . These are large clamps that you use to secure the hair properly. This is also called root-clipping in the curly world.
Secure your hair in the clips, then apply a little mousse or hair spray to the hair and then dry it (while your hair is still in the clips) with a hairdryer. Below you will find a photo of root clipping, which is done with special clamps .
Tip 3: Use an afro comb
This tip is also definitely recommended. You probably know them, the narrow combs with long pins: the afro comb . Is your hair completely dry? And are you completely done with your routine? Then bring your hair forward and gently slide the comb into your hair, repeating this step until you have achieved the desired volume.
Tip 4: Micro Popping
Sometimes we focus quite a lot on hair lengths. But did you know that with micro popping you also focus on the roots of your hair? With micro pops you take a towel in your hand and squeeze the hair. You do this with small parts of the hair each time (hence the term, micro). Then you go through your entire hair in this way. Move your head to the left and right so that you can micro-plop all parts of your hair. There are even more methods for popping, which we have listed for you here !
Tip 5: Go to the (curly) hairdresser regularly
Haven't been to a hairdresser in a while? Or have you never been to a curly hairdresser? Then it is really worth it! Sometimes it may be that you need more layers in your hair to make it airier.
Curl hairdressers often cut hair dry on unwashed hair. This allows the hairdresser to see clearly how your hair falls.
Tip 6: Use a hair spray
A hair spray is a product that dries quickly on your hair. It gives your hair some stiffness so you can get extra volume. Spray the hair spray on dry hair, then grab your hairdryer and blow dry it completely. Then shake out your hair by running your hands through your hair or using the afro comb.
Tip 7: Use a deep cleansing shampoo more often
Do you often use a co-wash ? or do you not often use shampoo ? Then we really recommend that you do this! A shampoo helps you to properly clean your scalp and hair. This prevents your hair from falling out due to residues that can remain on your hair and prevents build-up .
Tip 8: Use a mousse (together with your gel)
Use a mousse at the roots of your hair. Apply a few pumps to your palm and apply to your roots. It is most convenient to simply let the mousse go over it: you do not have to massage it in.
Tip 9: Separate your clumps
Clumps are basically groups of curls together. Some 'groups' may be broader than others. If you carefully make these groups smaller by taking them apart, you will achieve more volume!
Tip 10: Check your current products
Do your products contain a lot of oil and butters? Then this may be too heavy for your hair. Switch to another product to see if this works for you. In this case, use lighter products .
Let's try!
Give your curls time to get used to it, if you apply a tip, try it out several times. Finally, it is also useful to let your curls get used to it after a haircut.
Give your hair some time and see which tips suit you best! Which method are you going to try? Let me know in the comments!
