How do you use a conditioner?

You use a conditioner after washing your hair. With the following steps you ensure that your curls get the best care. Did you know that using a brush for curls can really make a difference? Discover a handy step-by-step plan for the correct use of a conditioner below:

  1. Apply the conditioner to damp hair, especially the lengths. Avoid the scalp, but if you suffer from dry hair at the roots, you can apply a little conditioner there without massaging it in.
  2. Distribute the conditioner evenly through your hair. This is crucial for optimal hydration. Use a wide-toothed comb, your fingers, or a special brush to distribute the conditioner evenly and prevent damage.
  3. Let the conditioner sit for a few minutes. Usually 3 minutes is enough, but always check the instructions on the packaging, because some conditioners need more time to sit.
  4. Rinse the conditioner thoroughly with lukewarm to warm water so that your curls remain soft and supple without any product residue.

Why a conditioner for curly hair?

We can't say it enough: conditioner is incredibly important if you have curly hair. When you wash your hair with shampoo, your hair cuticles open up, which can make your hair feel rough. This is also called alkaline, which means that your hair gets a higher pH (less acidic) because of the shampoo.

At that point, your hair is at its most vulnerable. If the hair cuticles are open and you don't use conditioner, this can lead to faster hair breakage, loss of shine and moisture. As a result, your curls don't stay in shape and your hair becomes damaged almost immediately.

Using a conditioner for damaged hair

If your curly hair is already damaged by brushing, dyeing or external influences, it is even more important to use conditioner. A conditioner forms a layer around your hair that helps to comb it more easily and protects and repairs your hair. This layer is created by a reaction between your hair and the ingredients in the conditioner. This formula allows the product to adhere to your hair and provides protection, making your hair feel soft and nourished again.

The benefits of a conditioner in brief

  • Closes the hair cuticles: A shampoo opens your hair cuticles which is necessary to remove dirt. A conditioner closes these again. This ensures that your hair becomes smoother and less vulnerable.
  • Restores moisture balance: After shampooing, your hair can feel drier. A conditioner restores that moisture balance, so your curls stay hydrated and hold better.
  • Protects against damage: Open hair cuticles make you more vulnerable to breakage and dryness. A conditioner closes these again, making your hair stronger and more resistant to daily influences.
  • Makes your hair softer and easier to comb: A conditioner makes your hair supple, which is especially useful for curly hair that easily gets tangled.
  • Gives your hair shine: By closing the hair cuticles again, light can reflect better on your hair, making it shinier and healthier looking.
  • Prevents frizzy hair: A layer around your hair protects it and prevents frizzy hair.

Conditioners within the Curly Girl Method

A conditioner is essential for curly hair. But why is a CG conditioner even better? This is because many 'normal' conditioners often contain silicones and drying alcohol in very high concentrations. Silicones are added to give the hair a shiny effect. Something you notice immediately after washing, but did you know that silicones that are not water-based can only be rinsed out with a strong cleansing (not CG-proof) shampoo such as a final wash ?

If you don't do this, a layer of silicone can remain on your hair that continues to build up. This makes your hair look dull and your curls will fall out or even disappear faster. Some conditioners contain drying alcohol in addition to silicone. This ingredient is used to make the texture of the product creamy and shiny or to extend its shelf life. CG conditioners therefore use alternatives that do not dry out the hair, so that your curls remain optimally hydrated.

The difference between a conditioner and a cream rinse

There is actually no difference between a conditioner and a conditioner. Both do exactly the same thing: they make your hair soft after washing, easier to comb and help against frizz. Conditioner used to be the usual term in the Netherlands, but nowadays we mainly use the term conditioner, just like in the rest of the world. If you still see a conditioner somewhere, it may be a lighter formula. In Spain and Germany this term was also used, but in America you only hear conditioner.

Conditioner and a leave-in conditioner, what is the difference?

It all seems very similar, especially if you are just starting out with the Curly Girl Method, which has many English terms for conditioners. You can divide conditioners into 3 groups: conditioners (so the same name), leave-in conditioners and deep conditioners.

You use a conditioner after washing and then rinse it out. The leave-in conditioner , as the name suggests, stays in your hair and you do not rinse it out. This often forms the basis before you apply a gel or other stylers.

Then you also have the deep conditioner or hair mask . You rinse that out too, but you leave it on longer than a regular conditioner to let it work in deeper.
