What is a curl shampoo?

A shampoo is basically a hair product that ensures that your scalp and hair are cleaned. It removes dirt and residue from old products. Most shampoos are liquid, but in recent years more and more shampoos have become available in solid form. This new trend also puts the focus on our environment, because these shampoos do not contain water and plastic packaging.

What is the difference between a normal shampoo and a curl shampoo?

Curl shampoos are specially formulated by manufacturers. They often contain more moisturizing ingredients than 'normal' shampoos.

What should you avoid in a curl shampoo?

You don't want sulphates, silicones, mineral oils, waxes and drying alcohols in your shampoo. All types of shampoo on our website are free of these ingredients. These ingredients can dry out, damage and make your curls frizzy.

What is a good shampoo for curls?

The ideal shampoo cleans your scalp well but does not 'strip' your scalp. Stripping means that the shampoo really removes everything from your scalp. Your scalp produces natural oils. If you remove it again and again, your skin will produce extra oil, which can lead to greasy hair or other complaints, such as itching and dandruff. So an ideal curl shampoo provides a clean scalp, but does not wash everything away.

What types of curl shampoos are there?

There are different types of shampoos available. We classify the shampoos by substance and effect (degree of cleaning).

Substance

Liquid shampoos: The most common form of shampoo. The shampoo is liquid.

Solid shampoos: A shampoo bar is a product that cleanses your hair and scalp just like a liquid shampoo. However, a shampoo bar is in solid shape, often round or square. Rub the shampoo bar between your hands, after which you can apply the shampoo to your scalp.

Both variants are a good option as a shampoo. It is useful to check for yourself which shape suits you best.

The operation (degree of cleaning)

Some shampoos cleanse deeper than others. We hereby immediately make an important comment. Some manufacturers throw around terms such as: deep cleansing, clarifying, mild cleansing, etc. This may make you think that you have a good cleanser in your hands, but these terms are sometimes wrongly placed on packaging.

What is a clarifying shampoo?

A clarifying shampoo contains a stronger cleanser. The strongest shampoos contain sulphates, but we avoid sulphates in the CG Method. There are also clarifying CG shampoos that do not contain sulphate but do cleanse thoroughly. Some curlies avoid these shampoos, but there are also many curlies who benefit from such a shampoo.

You can safely use a clarifying shampoo, but they are slightly more powerful than the mild variants. For each shampoo we indicate which category it falls within and which type of hair it is suitable for. We make a distinction between the degree of cleaning: strong cleansing shampoos and mild variants.

When do you use a clarifying shampoo?

This can be for several reasons:

• If you quickly suffer from greasy hair
• When your scalp doesn't feel clean
• If you swim often
• If you quickly suffer from build-up (residues of products that remain on your hair, leading to dull hair, sagging, no cast and longer drying time)
• Because it feels wonderfully clean after washing

Tips for using a strong cleansing shampoo

Do not use a clarifying shampoo too often, at most once or twice every two weeks. In addition to a clarifying shampoo, it is best to also have an (extremely) mild shampoo at home.

What is a mild shampoo?

A mild shampoo contains cleansers that are extra mild for your scalp. They clean well, but slightly milder than the clarifying variants. We prefer mild shampoos, although you can alternate between a mild and a clarifying shampoo.

In addition to standard mild shampoos, there are also extremely mild shampoos, ideal for daily use and perfect for curly hair because they do not dry out your hair. Do you have a dry scalp? Then an extremely mild shampoo is for you! In addition to this shampoo, use a clarifying shampoo once every two weeks or a final wash shampoo monthly.
